The decline in female labor force participation isn’t solely attributed to motherhood—but the reasons why women are leaving the workforce differ for married and unmarried women, with and without children.

To keep highly educated, working age women in the workforce, employers must strive to improve employment conditions, with flexible work options, gender wage equality, and family-friendly policies critical to retention. With greater female labor force participation, the U.S. will see increased GDP growth, plus higher living standards and wider opportunities for women’s partners and children.
